Triathlon & Ironman Coaching for the Time-Optimised Professional

Engineering precision meets 25 years of endurance experience. Based in Auckland, New Zealand. Coaching globally via TrainingPeaks.

Coached by an engineer. Tested at the front of the pack.

I'm Mark Bowstead, founder of Bowstead Performance Coaching. I've spent 25 years in endurance sport, starting in multisport at age 11, racing professionally for 10 years on the international Ironman 70.3 and ITU Long Course circuits, and now coaching age-group athletes who want results without sacrificing the rest of their lives.

A few of the receipts:

- 2009 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Champion, 20-24 age group — Perth, Australia (3km / 80km / 20km)

- 1st, IRONMAN 70.3 Buffalo Springs (Lubbock, Texas)

- 3rd, IRONMAN Australia — including the bike course record

- 5x National (NZ) Long Distance Triathlon podium

- Multiple IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship appearances — career best 16th

- Multiple Hy-Vee Championship appearances (the world champs of non-draft Olympic-distance)

- Represented Cycling New Zealand at the World Zwift Championships

Off the bike, I hold a First Class Honours degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Auckland, with sports science and biomedical engineering papers — earned while training 25+ hours a week and racing pro. That intersection of engineering thinking and lived pro experience is what shapes every program I write.

Built for athletes who can't train like pros — but want to perform like one

You probably have a demanding job, family commitments, and travel that breaks any rigid 20-hour-a-week training plan within two weeks. You're not interested in cookie-cutter Ironman programs that ignore the reality of your Tuesday at 9pm.

My coaching is built for:

- Executives and professionals targeting their first 70.3 Taupo or IRONMAN New Zealand

- Time-poor athletes wanting a sub-12, sub-11, or sub-10 IRONMAN

- Returning athletes coming back after kids, injury, or career intensity

- Age-groupers chasing a podium, world champs qualification, or a genuine personal best

- Marathoners and multisport athletes wanting structured, data-driven programming

Every program is 1-on-1 via TrainingPeaks, with sessions built around your physiology, your power and pace zones, and your actual life, not a template.

The Bowstead Method

Engineered

Every session has a measurable purpose. Power targets, pace zones, and HR ranges set from your data — not guessed. Programs are built like systems: inputs, outputs, and feedback loops.

Lived

I've raced at every level you might be chasing, from first 70.3 to the world stage. The decisions I make about your taper, your race-week travel, your nutrition strategy come from doing it under pressure, not reading about it.

Adaptive

Your plan adjusts to your week — work travel, illness, life. Continuous feedback via TrainingPeaks means your training matches your actual capacity, not a theoretical version of you.
